Streamax Bus-Specific AEBS: Designed for TfL2.5-Certified to Drive Vision Zero

2026 02-27

Streamax has developed a Bus-Specific Automatic Emergency Braking System (AEBS) engineered for urban transit dynamics. Designed to meet the rigorous TfL2.5 standard and deployed on London buses, the system addresses expanded test scenarios and stringent false activation thresholds, supporting Vision Zero through enhanced urban safety.

Engineering Bus Safety for the Vision Zero Era

To advance the goals of Vision Zero in high-density urban environments, Streamax has developed an Automatic Emergency Braking System (AEBS) purpose-built for bus operations. Rather than adapting passenger-vehicle logic, the system is engineered around the real dynamics of public transit—large vehicle mass, high passenger density, and continuous stop-and-go traffic. With enhanced emergency braking capability, Streamax's AEBS is designed to reduce collision severity in critical moments, protecting both onboard passengers and pedestrians, and supporting cities in their pursuit of zero traffic fatalities.

Streamax’s Bus-Specific AEBS Meets the TfL2.5 Standard

Meeting the World’s Most Demanding Bus AEBS Standard: TfL2.5

Streamax’s bus-specific AEBS has been developed in alignment with TfL2.5_AEB requirements and aims to be one of the first supplier globally to achieve this certification. The system is designed in alignment with the rigorous TfL2.5_AEB safety requirements and has been deployed on public buses operating in London, where it is currently undergoing final in-vehicle certification testing.

Recognized as one of the most demanding AEBS validation frameworks globally, TfL2.5 requires comprehensive system-level verification under actual bus operating conditions. Unlike conventional European regulatory standards—such as UNECE R131, which define only a limited number of baseline test scenarios—TfL2.5 dramatically expands the number and complexity of required validation cases. In addition to standard forward-collision scenarios, the framework introduces dedicated bus operational test conditions, including bus-stop approach events and other public transit specific maneuvers that reflect the realities of urban service routes.

Equally demanding is the framework's false activation threshold. TfL2.5 sets an exceptionally high stability requirement, limiting unintended emergency braking activations to no more than once within 300,000 kilometers of operational mileage. This reliability benchmark, which far exceeding typical industry practice, places significant pressure on perception accuracy, environmental interpretation, and decision-making calibration.

These compounded requirements, including expanded scenario coverage, transit-specific validation design, and ultra-low false activation tolerance, have raised the technical barrier well beyond conventional passenger-vehicle AEB standards. As a result, even established Tier-1 suppliers with strong track records in the passenger car segment have faced considerable challenges in adapting their systems to meet TfL's bus-focused regulatory expectations.

Streamax's AEBS is engineered to meet these stringent criteria, delivering enhanced emergency braking capability while supporting the Vision Zero objective by reducing collision severity in complex urban environments.

Building a Safer Future in Public Transport

Driven by a long-term commitment to road safety, Streamax continues to advance intelligent safety technologies that address the real risks of urban mobility. By developing solutions purpose-built for public transportation and validating them under the world's most demanding operational standards, Streamax aims to support safer streets for all road users. Looking ahead, Streamax remains focused on partnering with cities, operators, and regulators to accelerate the adoption of reliable safety systems—contributing to the shared goal of reducing traffic injuries and fatalities and advancing the Vision Zero agenda worldwide.
